Medical Aesthetics Glossary: Terms Organized by Category

Anatomy

Terms describing the structural building blocks of the face and neck.

Dermis

The middle skin layer beneath the epidermis, containing collagen and elastin fibres. Skin firmness and elasticity largely depend on the health of the dermis; skin tightening treatments target this layer.

Epidermis

The outermost layer of the skin, forming the first line of defence against external factors. Peeling and laser treatments generally work at the epidermal level to support tone evenness and smoothness.

Subcutaneous Tissue

The layer beneath the dermis, containing fat cells and connective tissue. Treatments like Endolift reduce excess fat in this layer using heat to refine contour.

Fibroblast

A cell type found in the dermis responsible for producing collagen and elastin. Many regenerative treatments aim to directly increase fibroblast activity; see collagen booster treatment.

Fat Pad

Small, naturally occurring fat deposits in specific areas of the face that provide contour and fullness. These pads change in volume and position with age; see our why does our face age guide for more detail.

Platysma Muscle

A thin muscle at the front of the neck, running between the chin and chest. Its laxity and banding create the appearance known as neck bands.

Masseter Muscle

A strong muscle at the angle of the jaw responsible for chewing. An overdeveloped masseter can give the face a square appearance; masseter treatment can soften this look.

Zygomatic Bone (Cheekbone)

The bone structure in the middle of the face known as the cheekbone. Reduced support in this area causes the cheeks to appear flatter; cheek filler can help restore that support.

Melanin

The substance produced by pigment cells in the skin that determines skin colour. Imbalanced melanin production after sun damage or inflammation can lead to dark spots; see our pigmentation treatment guide.

SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System)

A fibrous tissue network in the deeper layers of the face that connects the muscles to the skin. Surgical facelifts target this layer directly, while non-surgical treatments act at more superficial layers.

Retaining Ligament

Small connective structures that anchor facial tissue to bone. Weakening of these ligaments contributes to soft tissue descending downward and the appearance of sagging.

Buccal Fat Pad

A natural fat deposit in the lower-mid cheek that gives the face fullness. Prominent in youth, its thinning with age can leave cheeks looking hollow.

Temple Region

The upper side region of the face between the forehead and ear. Volume loss here can cause the brow tail to drop and weaken the overall facial frame; see temple filler treatment.

Periorbital Region (Eye Area)

The delicate area surrounding the eye, where skin thickness is at its thinnest. Because of this thin structure, product and technique choice in this region is particularly careful; see under-eye light filler.

Submental Region (Under the Chin)

The area directly under the chin where it meets the neck. The fullness known as a double chin forms in this region; see our double chin and jawline contouring guide.

Malar Region (Around the Cheekbone)

The soft tissue area directly over the cheekbone. Volume loss here directly affects the overall fullness of the midface.

Extracellular Matrix

The support network filling the space between cells, made up of structural components such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Skin firmness depends directly on the quality of this matrix.

Sebaceous Gland

Small glands in the skin that produce natural oil (sebum). Overactive sebaceous glands can contribute to enlarged pores and acne.

Reticular Dermis

The deeper sub-layer of the dermis containing thicker collagen bundles. Much of the skin's structural strength comes from this layer.

Connective Tissue

The tissue type that binds and supports different structures throughout the body. It provides the relationship between skin, muscle and bone.

Ageing Patterns

Types of change that appear in the face and neck over time.

Volume Loss

The reduction in fullness that results from the gradual thinning of facial fat pads and bone structure over time. This is generally considered a separate issue from skin laxity and is addressed with filler.

Skin Laxity

The loss of skin's elasticity and firmness as collagen and elastin production decreases. This is a different mechanism from volume loss; skin tightening treatments target this issue directly.

Photoaging

Early signs of ageing on the skin caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight. Inconsistent sun protection accelerates this process; see our sun protection guide.

Bone Resorption

The gradual loss of density and volume in facial bones, particularly around the jaw and cheekbones, with age. This process weakens the overall support structure of the face and is detailed in our why does our face age guide.

Ptosis (Sagging)

The downward drooping of skin and soft tissue due to gravity and loss of support. Mild to moderate ptosis can be addressed with non-surgical face and neck lift methods.

Nasolabial Folds

The lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth, usually caused by midface volume loss. See our nasolabial filler guide for the detailed cause-treatment relationship.

Marionette Lines

Lines running from the corners of the mouth down toward the chin, usually reflecting a combination of volume loss and skin laxity. This area is often addressed with a combination of filler and skin tightening.

Double Chin

Fullness under the chin caused by excess fat and/or skin laxity. Our double chin and jawline contouring guide covers the different causes of this concern.

Platysmal Bands

The vertical band-like appearance in the neck caused by laxity of the platysma muscle. Neck band treatment targets this muscle to soften the appearance.

Midface Descent

The process by which cheek tissue gradually shifts downward and inward due to loss of support. This contributes to deeper nasolabial folds and a less defined jawline.

Tear Trough

The hollow or shadowed area between the lower eyelid and cheek caused by volume loss. Under-eye light filler is one option that targets this area.

Jowl

Soft tissue along the jawline that sags downward and overflows below the jawbone. This appearance can be targeted with treatments like Endolift for the jawline.

Turkey Neck

A sagging, loose neck appearance caused by laxity of the neck skin and platysma muscle. Our neck tightening guide covers this concern in detail.

Static Wrinkle

A wrinkle that remains visible even when the face is at rest, usually related to collagen loss. Unlike dynamic wrinkles, it's linked to tissue structure rather than muscle movement.

Dynamic Wrinkle

A wrinkle that only appears with a specific expression, such as smiling or frowning. Anti-wrinkle treatments target this type of wrinkle.

Fine Lines

Lighter lines on the surface of the skin, distinct from deeper wrinkles. These can often be softened with skin-quality treatments such as skin booster.

Intrinsic Aging

The genetically programmed ageing process that occurs with the natural passage of time. It progresses at a certain rate in everyone, independent of sun or environmental factors.

Extrinsic Aging

The additional ageing effect on skin caused by external factors like sun, smoking and pollution. This type of ageing is largely preventable; see our sun protection guide.

Treatment Planning

Terms describing treatment technologies and planning concepts.

RF (Radiofrequency)

A technology that stimulates collagen production in the dermis using controlled heat energy. Treatments like XERF and Morpheus8 work on this principle.

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)

A technology that focuses ultrasound energy into the deeper layers of the skin to trigger collagen renewal. Ultherapy is the best-known treatment using this technology.

Microneedling

A technique that creates controlled micro-injuries in the dermis to trigger collagen production. Morpheus8 combines microneedling with RF energy.

Cannula

A blunt-tipped, flexible injection tool that reduces tissue trauma compared with sharp needles. Endolift uses a fine cannula to deliver energy and fibre-optic technology beneath the skin.

Combination Treatment

Planning multiple treatments together to address more than one mechanism (such as volume and skin quality) at once. This approach is a core part of the Efem Method philosophy.

Cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid

A form of hyaluronic acid whose molecules are chemically bonded together, making it longer-lasting. This form is preferred in dermal filler applications to provide structural support.

Biostimulatory Filler

A filler type that triggers the skin's own collagen production rather than providing direct volume. It falls under our regenerative and biostimulatory treatments category.

Laser Toning

A technique using repeated low-energy laser pulses to even out skin tone. Q-Switch and Lumecca are the main technologies used for this purpose.

Hyaluronic Acid

A molecule naturally found in the skin with a high capacity to retain water. It's the most commonly used substance in filler and skin booster treatments; see skin booster treatment.

Hyaluronidase

An enzyme used to dissolve injected hyaluronic acid-based filler. It's considered during consultation when correction of an unwanted filler result is needed.

Q-Switch Laser

A laser type that delivers high energy in extremely short pulses to target pigment cells. For spots and uneven tone, you can view our Q-Switch laser treatment page.

Ablative Treatment

A treatment type that physically removes or perforates the surface layer of the skin. It can offer more pronounced results but generally requires a longer recovery period.

Non-Ablative Treatment

A treatment type that works at deeper layers through heat or energy without damaging the skin surface. Endolift and XERF fall into this category and generally offer a shorter recovery period.

Thermal Relaxation Time

The time required for a heated tissue to cool without damaging surrounding structures. It's one of the safety principles behind energy-based devices.

Fluence

The amount of energy a laser or energy-based device delivers per unit area. This setting is determined by the physician based on skin type and treatment goal.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

A skin treatment technology using a broad range of light wavelengths. Lumecca is an advanced version of this technology.

Lipolysis

The process by which fat cells are broken down through heat or chemical means and naturally cleared by the body. Our how Endolift reduces fat guide details this process.

PDO Thread (Thread Lift)

A technique using special threads placed under the skin, gradually absorbed by the body, that provide a temporary lifting effect and collagen stimulation. It works through different mechanisms from Endolift; see Endolift vs thread lift.

Skin Booster

A treatment in which non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid is injected to improve skin quality and hydration. See our skin booster treatment guide for more detail.

Volumizing Filler

A high-density filler type designed to restore lost volume. It's used to provide structural support in areas like the cheek and chin.

Collagen Induction Therapy

A treatment category aiming to trigger the skin's own collagen production through a controlled stimulus. Microneedling, RF and HIFU technologies fall into this category.

Neuromodulator

A substance group that temporarily limits muscle movement to reduce expression wrinkles. Botulinum toxin is the best-known example of this category.

Tissue Coagulation

The process by which heat energy structurally alters tissue proteins, causing them to firm up. This forms the basis of the tightening effect seen with RF and HIFU treatments.

Energy-Based Device

The general term for treatment devices that use a form of energy, such as RF, HIFU or laser, for therapeutic purposes. These devices support skin renewal at different depths and through different mechanisms.

Recovery Terminology

Terms describing the post-treatment process.

Downtime

The period that must pass before returning to daily life after a treatment. This varies by treatment; see our Endolift recovery time guide for detail.

Erythema (Redness)

Temporary redness caused by the widening of blood vessels in the skin. It's a normal response after many treatments and generally clears within a few hours to a few days.

Edema (Swelling)

Temporary puffiness caused by fluid accumulation in tissue. It's an expected finding particularly after injection and microneedling treatments.

Ecchymosis (Bruising)

The purple discolouration in the skin caused when small blood vessels are affected during injection. It resolves on its own, though depending on the content it can take from a few days to two weeks.

Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

New dark spots that form when healing or irritated skin is exposed to UV light. Reducing this risk makes sun protection after treatment critically important.

Neocollagenesis

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

The numerical measure expressing how much a sunscreen protects against UVB rays. Broad-spectrum SPF is frequently recommended during the post-treatment healing period; see our sun protection guide.

Induration

A temporary firmness or thickening felt in the treated area during tissue healing. It generally reduces on its own within a few weeks, particularly after RF and microneedling treatments.

Tenderness

Temporary pain or discomfort felt when the treated area is touched. It's typically a natural part of injection and energy-based treatments.

Crusting

The temporary protective layer that forms on the skin surface after ablative treatments or deep peels. It should be allowed to shed on its own and not be picked at.

Desquamation (Peeling)

The shedding of dead skin cells as part of the renewal process. It's an expected and generally positive stage after chemical peel treatment.

Aftercare

The complete set of instructions to follow after a treatment to support results and reduce complication risk. It's determined individually for each treatment; see our Endolift aftercare guide.

Warmth Sensation

A temporary feeling of heat experienced during and after energy-based treatments like RF and HIFU. It's a natural result of tissue warming and typically resolves within a few hours.

Recovery Timeline

The sequence of expected stages (swelling, redness, results appearing) that occur after a treatment. Our when will you see Endolift results guide explains this process in detail.

Tissue Repair

The process by which damaged or stimulated tissue renews itself. Supporting this process is the core goal of many regenerative treatments.

Onset of Results

The time frame in which a treatment's visible effect begins to appear. For collagen-based treatments this period is generally measured in weeks; see when will you see Endolift results.

Longevity

The total length of time a treatment's results remain visible. This varies by treatment type, individual metabolism and aftercare; see how long do Endolift results last.

Consultation Terminology

Terms used during assessment and decision-making.

Informed Consent

The patient's written approval given after being informed of a treatment's content, risks and expected outcomes. It's a standard step before every treatment.

Patch Test

A small preliminary test on the skin to assess the risk of an allergic reaction to a product or substance. It may be recommended before treatment for certain sensitive ingredients.

Contraindication

A medical term describing situations in which a treatment is not safe for a particular patient. Pregnancy, active infection, or certain medication use are common examples.

Candidacy Assessment

The physician's evaluation of whether a patient is a suitable fit for a given treatment. This assessment is the first step in every consultation with Dr. Efem.

Realistic Expectation

The correct shared understanding between patient and physician of what a treatment can realistically achieve. This is one of the core principles of the Efem Method approach.

Before-After Photography

The objective evaluation of progress using photos taken from standardized angles before and after treatment. You can view examples in our before-after gallery.

Skin Type (Fitzpatrick Scale)

A scale classifying skin from 1 to 6 based on its reaction to sun exposure. It's used particularly to determine the correct energy setting in pigmentation treatments.

Facial Mapping

A consultation technique that evaluates volume, laxity and symmetry changes region by region across the face. It's the first step in determining the right treatment combination.

Symmetry Assessment

The process of examining the natural differences between the right and left sides of the face. Perfect symmetry isn't the goal; the aim is bringing existing asymmetry into a balanced appearance.

Photo Documentation

Recording each stage of the treatment process through photos taken from standardized angles. This is used both to track progress and support future planning.

Second Opinion

The process of seeking additional assessment from another physician before a treatment decision. This can be helpful for complex cases or those with multiple options.

Treatment Sequencing

Determining the order and intervals in which multiple treatments will be applied. For example, when filler and skin tightening are planned together, the sequence can affect results.

Follow-up Visit

A scheduled check-in visit to assess healing and results after a treatment. It's a standard part of many treatment plans.

Medical History

The review of a patient's past health conditions, medication use and allergies during consultation. This step is essential for a safe treatment plan.

Allergic Reaction Risk

The likelihood of the body producing an excessive immune response to a product or substance. Past allergies are always reviewed during consultation.

Dosing

Determining the amount of substance used in injection-based treatments based on the patient's anatomy. Too much or too little dosing directly affects how natural the result looks.

Off-label Use

Using a product for a purpose outside its original approved indication, supported by clinical experience. This kind of use should always be discussed openly with the patient by the physician.

Compliance

The degree to which a patient follows post-treatment care instructions. Good compliance directly affects the quality and longevity of results.

Natural-Looking Result

A treatment outcome that fits with a person's own facial features without giving a noticeable "done" appearance. This principle underlies all of our filler applications.

Facial Balance

Planning aimed at giving different regions of the face a proportionate, harmonious appearance relative to one another. Rather than treating a single area in isolation, a holistic approach is adopted; see our facial balance guide.

Anatomy-Based Planning

Shaping a treatment decision according to a person's own bone structure, fat distribution and skin quality. The Efem Method places this approach at its centre.

Overfilled Look

The unnatural appearance that results from filler being applied in excessive amounts or the wrong area. To avoid this, gradual and measured planning is preferred.

A treatment planning method in which results are built gradually over time rather than through one sudden, large change. This approach is preferred for its natural appearance and lower risk profile.

Minimalist Aesthetics

A treatment philosophy that aims for the most natural result with the least possible intervention. Under this approach, the goal isn't to change the face but to support its existing features.

Function-Aesthetics Balance

Planning a treatment so that it preserves natural expression and movement, not just appearance. This is a particularly important consideration in masseter and neuromodulator treatments.

Regenerative Medicine Concepts

Treatment concepts based on the skin's own self-renewal mechanisms.

PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide)

A molecule derived from salmon DNA that supports tissue repair. It's frequently used in skin booster treatments to improve skin quality.

Exosome

Small cellular structures that enable communication between cells and support tissue renewal. Exosome treatment uses these structures to support skin quality.

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

A plasma component derived from a person's own blood, rich in growth factors. PRP treatment is injected to support skin and hair renewal.

Growth Factor

A protein type that triggers cell renewal and tissue repair. It's part of the active mechanism behind regenerative treatments like exosome treatment and PRP.

Salmon DNA (Polynucleotide)

A component derived from salmon roe that supports tissue repair and hydration. Salmon DNA treatment uses this component to improve skin quality.

Biostimulation

Peptide

Short protein chains made of amino acids that send specific signals to cells. They're used in skin rejuvenation formulas to support collagen production; see youth vaccine treatment.

Mesotherapy

A technique in which vitamins, minerals and active ingredients are injected with fine needles into the mid-layer of the skin. Mesotherapy treatment can be applied to the face, neck, under-eye area and scalp.

Stem Cell

Special cells capable of self-renewal and transformation into different cell types. In some applications like hair stem cell therapy, they're used to support tissue renewal.

Cytokine

Small protein molecules that enable communication between cells and regulate inflammation and healing processes. They play an important role in the tissue repair process.

Platelet

Blood cells responsible for clotting, rich in growth factors. They form the primary active component of PRP treatment.

Angiogenesis

The process by which new blood vessels form in tissue. It's a necessary biological mechanism for healthy tissue repair and nourishment.

Cell Proliferation

The process by which cells multiply through division. Regenerative treatments support skin quality by increasing the proliferation of cells such as fibroblasts.

Extracellular Vesicle

Small particles secreted by cells that carry biological signalling molecules. Exosomes are the best-known example of this type of vesicle.

Autologous Treatment

A treatment type in which tissue or components taken from a patient's own body, such as blood or fat, are reapplied to that same patient. PRP is the most common example of an autologous treatment.

Tissue Regeneration

The process by which damaged or ageing tissue is structurally and functionally renewed. This is the ultimate goal of regenerative aesthetic treatments.
